Create a milestone in MS Project 2007

Author: mety Labels::

You can create milestones in your project to represent external tasks (external task: A task that represents a linked task in another project, providing an easy way to review the attributes of linked tasks without switching between projects. An external task can be changed only in the source project.). For example, one of your project's tasks requires an application being developed by another company. You can create a milestone with zero duration in your project to represent the completion of that application.
Tip You can also track external tasks in your project with task dependencies (task dependencies: A relationship between two linked tasks; linked by a dependency between their finish and start dates. There are four kinds of task dependencies: Finish-to-start [FS], Start-to-start [SS], Finish-to-finish [FF], and Start-to-finish [SF].). Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007 offers the ability to create cross-project dependencies to track milestones that are associated with external deliverables (deliverable: A tangible and measurable result, outcome, or item that must be produced to complete a project or part of a project. Typically, the project team and project stakeholders agree on project deliverables before the project begins.).

Create a milestone with zero duration

  1. On the View menu, click Gantt Chart.
  2. Type the name of the new milestone in the Task Name field for the first empty row in the list. If you are turning an existing task into a milestone, skip this step.
  3. Type 0 in the Duration field of the milestone, and then press ENTER. When you type a duration of zero for a task, Office Project Professional 2007 automatically displays the milestone symbol Icon image in the Gantt Chart view on that day.

Create a milestone with a duration of more than zero

Milestones typically have zero duration (duration: The total span of active working time that is required to complete a task. This is generally the amount of working time from the start to finish of a task, as defined by the project and resource calendar.); however, some milestones may need a duration. For example, your project has an approval milestone at the end of a phase (phase: A group of related tasks that completes a major step in a project.), and you know that the approval process will take a week.
  1. On the View menu, click Gantt Chart.
  2. Type the name of the new milestone in the Task Name field for the first empty row in the list. If you are turning an existing task into a milestone, skip this step.
  3. With the milestone selected in the grid, click Task Information Button image.
  4. On the Advanced tab, type the milestone duration in the Duration box.
  5. Select the Mark task as milestone check box, and then click OK. Office Project Professional 2007 displays the milestone symbol Icon image in the Gantt Chart view on the last day of the task.
