What is Your MAC Address

Author: mety Labels::

MAC (Media Access Control ) address (also known as your Ethernet Hardware Address (EHA), adapter address, or physical address) is a unique identifier assigned, in most cases physically printed, on most network adapters or NICs (Network Interface Cards) or LAN (Local Area Network) cards and managed by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) in one of three spaces -- EUI-48 (Extended Unique Identifier), EUI-64, and MAC-48.

IP (Internet Protocol) addresses identify a computer on the Internet or on a LAN. Computers or devices on the same local area network may share the same IP address but they are identified by their MAC address. For instance, computers or devices in an office intranet are part of the 192.168.3.x subnet, with IP addresses like 192.168.3.100 and 192.168.3.101. The router that connects that office to the Internet has the IP address 192.168.3.1. Think of it as different house numbers on the same street or different room numbers on a hotel floor.

Why is Your MAC Address Important

It is very important to know the MAC address of your computer or device -- especially when setting up or fixing a network connection. Some networks restrict access to only those computers they know, so the network asks for the computer's or device's MAC Address. For example, you may need to provide the MAC address of your laptop or pocket pc before you can connect to a wireless network. More often though, MAC addresses are used to match a software license key to a specific machine. At the network programming and administrative level, however, MAC addresses become increasingly important – especially when allowing DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to assign static IP addresses.

Since MAC addresses act as a seamless transition between the physical and network level, they appear in and are used for everything from level 2, Link (Data Link), up in the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model. Originally, no two MAC addresses were the same and it was very hard to fake -- just like it is very hard to find a room across the hall with the same door number as yours. However, with many new programs publicly available, this theory is becoming quite diluted. While there are many legitimate reasons to temporarily change a MAC address, for testing the security of a network for example, it's always a good idea to verify as much as possible so that no one can bypass MAC filtering, sniffing other connections (a form of online identity theft), or hide deviant behavior such as service attacks.

How to Find Your MAC Address

There are several ways of finding your computer's MAC address.

 Method 1:

1: Right click on the Network icon, marked by the red circle in Figure 1, in your System Tray, usually at the bottom right corner of the screen, and choose status.

The Local Area Connection Status dialog box will open.

2: Click on the Support tab then on the Details button.

The Network Connection Details dialog box will open.

3: The number indicated on the Physical Address line is your MAC address.

4: Copy that number.

5: Close the various dialog boxes.

 Method 2:
1: Click the Start Menu and choose Run. Alternatively, you can hold the Windows button then letter R and release them together.

2: Type cmd and click the OK button.

3: Type ipconfig /all and press the Enter.

4: The number indicated on the Physical Address line is your MAC address.

4: Copy that number.

5: Close the various dialog boxes.

  Mac Method

1: Choose the Apple Systems Preferences to open System Preferences.

2: Click the Network icon to open the Network Control Panel.

3: The Ethernet Address is the computer's MAC address.

If you still can not find your computer's MAC address, refer to the user manual or contact customer support for your computer or device

how to use Bookmarks in Word document

Author: mety Labels::

Basically a Bookmark is just what it's always been… something to mark your place… and Word will allow you to place multiple Bookmarks in your document. So, by placing Bookmarks at the locations to which we need to return we can save ourselves the time of the "scroll and search" process.

First, put your cursor at the location where the Bookmark needs to be placed.

Next we're off to the Insert menu/tab (depends upon the version of Word), then click the Bookmark choice/button.

At this point you should be looking at a dialog box along these lines:

At the top you can name the Bookmark - however, I found that I couldn't use any spaces in the names so keep that in mind to avoid a bit of frustration.

After you've named it click the Add button.

Obviously, you'll need to repeat this process any time you need to mark a location.

Now, as for using them to get back to the correct location… I can think of a couple of ways to accomplish this.

One way is to return to the Bookmark dialog box (Insert menu/tab, Bookmark choice/button), select the Bookmark in the list and
click the Go To button.

You'll also have to click the Close button to be able to return to working on your document.

The other method I'd like to mention is to use the Go To feature. (Edit menu, Go To choice -or- Home tab, Find button, Go To choice)

On the left choose Bookmark and then the field on the right will become a drop-down list of all Bookmarks in the document. Choose the correct one and
click the Go To button.

The advantage of this method would show up if you have multiple places to go.

Resend Outlook message

Author: mety Labels::

Maybe you sent something to one person and after the fact decided that it should also go to someone else… or maybe you sent something to someone who "lost" it and need to get the information to them once again.

Whatever drives the need to resend a message the question becomes how do you accomplish the task?

Well… we could recreate the message… but only those who really have a lot of extra time on their hands would be doing this.

We could go into the Sent Items folder and forward the message. Not necessarily a bad plan but I don't know about you but when I see "Fwd:" in the subject line the message drops down on my mental priority list. Not to mention that sometimes in the process of forwarding the message formatting is jumbled - and nobody likes to read messages that are just a mess.

So, what other option do we have?

Why we can resend it, of course… yep an actual resend… not a forward or brand new message.

Let's take a look.

Regardless of your Outlook version you need to start in the Sent Items folder.

Locate and open the message to be resent.

At this point our directions diverge:

Older versions of Outlook require you to go to the Actions menu and choose Resend This Message.

Outlook 2007 users can find what they need on the Message tab of the Ribbon. Click the Other Actions button and then choose Resend This Message from the list.

You'll find that a new message opens containing all the original information without any changes created by forwards.

You can also edit the message, address it to someone else… basically you're back to sending an everyday message… you just didn't have to rewrite it!

Sharing Folders in Vista The XP Way

Author: mety Labels::

As you may know, Windows Vista includes a Share button on its Explorer toolbar, but it doesn't work the same way it did in Windows XP. Instead, it pops up a wizard that tries to make things easier.

By default, the Share button in Vista will not let you choose the name of the shared folder. Even more so, if you want to share a folder within your user directory, you will end up with a weird share name, like this: \\computer\Users\geek\Contacts. That's obviously much more difficult to remember!

So, if you want to share folders the way you used to in Windows XP, simply right click the folder and choose the Properties option.

Next, click on the Advanced Sharing button.

Now, you should be able to check the box that says "Share this folder" and choose a share name for yourself, which, for example, will be accessible from \\computer\myshare. Much easier!

You can also click the Permissions button if you want to allow write access to the share or only allow access to a particular user.

Here's to easier and faster folder sharing in Windows Vista

Deleting Old System Restore Files

Author: mety Labels::

Have you ever got the feeling that you are losing space in your hard disk for no apparent reason? Have you tried finding out the sum total space occupied by all the files, and found that the available free space in the drive is lesser than expected (i.e. there is a certain amount of space which is occupied, but unaccounted for?) If you have, and are wondering where and what is occupying this space, read on.

Windows Vista has a utility called System Restore which is enabled by default. Periodically the operating system takes a snapshot of your computer and saves it as a Restore Point. This gives you the option to restore it back to this state at some point in the future, if you choose to. However, a vast majority of us do not utilize System Restore and are unaware that the restore points are occupying precious space on our hard disks.

A good practice to follow, provided your system is running smoothly, is to delete old restore points except the most recent one, by performing Disk Cleanup on a period basis.

This helps ensure the following dual advantages:

1. Unnecessary outdated save points are deleted

2. Retain the option to perform a System Restore to an earlier stable state if required.

Below is a step-by-step tutorial on how to delete these old restore points and recover some space in Windows. Administrator access will be required in order to perform this.

Step1: Navigate to the My Computer Screen as shown below

Step2: Right-Click and Open Properties for the "C" Drive

Step3: Click on Disk Cleanup and open the Disk Cleanup Window. Choose "My Files Only" or "Files from All Users on this Computer" as required. I normally use "Files from All Users on this Computer" as I clean up old files for all user accounts. Click on "Continue" in the Vista User Account Control Window

Step4: Navigate to the "More Options" tab, and click on the "Clean Up" button as indicated in the figure to delete old restore points to free up space. In the confirmation box, Click on "Delete"

Step5: Voila! It's done. A certain amount of free space will be recovered upon deleting old restore points.

Disk Cleanup can also be utilized to delete:
-Temporary Internet Files
-Offline Web-pages
-Files in Recycle Bin
-Hibernation File
-Thumbnails
-Windows Error Reporting Dump Files

Disk Cleanup should be performed on a regular basis in order to maximize performance.

Use Picture in MS Excel Charts

Author: mety Labels::

So, when you're working with charts in MS Excel are you looking for a way to make your audience take notice?

I'd bet that by now you've tried just about every color combination you can think of to give your creation a look that grabs attention.

If this is you and you're looking for yet another way to make those charts "pop" in the eyes of the viewer then may I suggest you add a few pictures?

No, I'm not suggesting that you simply put a picture or two in the corners of the chart… I'm actually suggesting that you change the elements of the chart into pictures.

Maybe turning something like this:

Into this:

you'll need to create an Excel chart. (This works on most charts - not just the bar charts - but for simplicity's sake I'll just refer to chart bars even though it applies to other shapes like pieces of pie charts.)

With that done you'll need to select one or all of the chart pieces to be changed. For example, to select all bars click on any bar. To select a single bar click once on a bar, wait a second then click again on that same bar.

With the bar(s) selected it's time to start changing the view.

As expected, I have different instructions depending upon the version of Excel you're using…

Let's start with older versions of Excel.

You'll need to double-click on the selected bar(s).

This will open the Format Data Series dialog box.

Now you need to click the Fill Effects button below the color palette.

At this point you should be looking at the Fill Effects dialog box.

Navigate to the Picture tab and click the Select Picture button.

This will open the same dialog box you see every time you try to locate a file.

Locate the picture file of your choice and click Insert.

Once back in the Fill Effects dialog box click OK, and then click OK one more time to exit back out to your Excel workbook.

You should be looking at a very "pretty" chart with the chosen picture in place of the plain old color schemes.

Now it's time for my Excel 2007 users.

While you still have the bar(s) to be changed selected you'll find that the Chart Tools will be available on the Ribbon.

You need to go to the Format tab within the Chart Tools on the Ribbon.

We're now looking for the Shape Fill button. Choose Picture from the list of options displayed.

This will immediately take you to the same type of dialog box we always use to locate files.

Locate the file that you want and click Insert.

This should take you back out to your workbook where you'll find the "new" version of your chart.

Obviously there are some limitations to this - pictures will be stretched, shrunk and cropped to fit in the bar or pie piece - therefore you may be unhappy with the results when trying to use complex pictures. Never forget your handy Ctrl + Z to undo a change that you don't like.

Also, you should keep in mind that while jazzing it up is good, too much will make it difficult to read or even distracting to the viewer.

Basically, choose wisely and you should find that you are quite pleased with the results
