Introducing IE 8's New Features

Author: mety Labels::

Microsoft recently released Internet Explorer 8 Beta and it already promises its users "the best Web experience ever." It is now available for download to everyone, but it primarily targets Web developers and designers so that they can test the new tools, layouts and programming enhancements.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta will run on both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows Vista with the Windows Vista SP1, as well as, Windows XP SP 2 and Windows Server 2003 and 2008. So, what do you say we go over a few of the new features found in IE 8? Let's go!

Controlling ActiveX Installations - Many controls are not secure and could be misused by malicious Web sites. Luckily, all of that can be eliminated by running ActiveX controls on a site by site basis.

Activities - This is a new right click menu feature in IE 8. You can right click a selected item to find a list of activities that can be done, such as blogging, defining, searching, translating and many more.

WebSlices - This new feature enables you to subscribe to marked content on a Web page. It is similar to subscribing to an RSS feed. When the content changes, you receive a notification on the new Favorites bar.

A WebSlice can also be previewed without an additional navigation, because it is provided as a drop down item under the Favorites bar. When you click on a WebSlice, it drops down and you can preview the content. You can then click through to go to the slice's original Web page or you can simply view it in the drop down list.

Developer Tools - These tools expose the way IE interprets a Web page. Therefore, you can view individual attributes of an element on a Web page, etc. To open the Developer Tools, press Shift + F12 or simply click on the Developer Tools button located on the Internet Explorer toolbar.

Favorites Bar - The Links bar has been replaced with a new Favorites bar. It can contain links to documents on your hard drive, WebSlices and RSS feeds.

Crash Recovery - This long awaited feature is finally making its debut in Internet Explorer. After a browser or individual tab crashes, you will now have the option of restoring it on the spot.

Google SketchUp is software that you can use to create, modify and share 3D models. It's easier to learn than other 3D modeling programs, which is why so many people are already using it. We designed SketchUp's simplified toolset, guided drawing system and clean look-and-feel to help you concentrate on two things: getting your work done as efficiently as possible, and having fun while you're doing it.

You can choose from two versions of our software. Google SketchUp is free for anyone, and allows you to build, view and edit 3D models
. Google SketchUp Pro adds the ability to share your data with other software, get email technical support, and create professional presentations—both print and digital—from your models.

You can download both versions of SketchUp right from here

Top 10 Websites For Smart Kids

Author: mety Labels::

Photobucket
  1. BrainPOP - This is actually an educational site, but your geeklings won't ever notice. The award-winning games and fun, animated videos make this a popular choice with school teachers and homeschooling parents. In fact, many parents prepare their children for standardized tests by using BrainPOP.

  2. NASA Kids' Club - There's something romantic about space, which is why many of us probably wanted to become astronauts when we were kids. I think a child's interest in astronomy should be heartily encouraged, which is why NASA Kids' Club is high on my list. Here, kids will have access to amazing photographs, footage, space facts and games.

  3. Marvel Kids - This is an awesome new site from Marvel Comics that took me by surprise. Unfortunately, both Marvel and DC Comics have lame, cluttered sites. However, Marvel Kids.com is fun, easy to navigate and includes some awesome freebies that even I enjoy. Check out the Iron Man animated shorts they are currently running - they are 10 times better than most of the comic book-related stuff on television right now!

  4. 4Kids TV- Here, kids can watch free, online episodes of their favorite Saturday morning cartoons, such as "Yu-Gi-Oh!" and "Chaotic." Awesome games abound on this site and it also serves as a safe social networking community for kids. Oh, and whoever writes their blog is quite clever (ahem).

  5. Making of a Brick- Ever wonder how LEGOs were made? Okay, smart Alec, maybe you already know. For the rest of us (including our kids), this is a fascinating and interactive online tour through a LEGO factory. As this site confesses, LEGOs aren't "scraped off the inside of magic trees by tiny Danish elves." And to think I believed that for years.

  6. Discovery Kids - It's not surprising that Discovery Channel would produce a fun, educational site for young nerds. Everything from dinosaurs to space is covered here. You know, all the stuff that interests kids and should still interest us. Well, if you're a geek, then I'm sure it does. One section of Discovery Kids is called "The Yuckiest Site on the Internet" and it's great fun, trust me.

  7. National Geographic Kids - Similar to Discovery Kids, this site encompasses science, nature and space. There are great suggestions for at-home activities, as well.

  8. PBS Kids Go! - Whether your geekling is a preschooler or a preteen, then PBS is a great resource for television during the day. (Except for that odd Charlie Rose interlude around lunchtime - what's up with that?) Their accompanying site is interactive, musical and educational. From "Arthur" to "Zoom," each popular PBS Kids show has its own online presence.

  9. Exploratorium - This is the official site for the famous San Francisco museum of "science, art and human perception." I've never made it there myself, but I've heard great things and the site is wonderful. From science news for kids to interactive games, this is another way to trick your geeklings into learning something new.

  10. Ask Dr. Universe - I like to think of this site as The Straight Dope for children. Here, Dr. Universe (the world's most curious cat) answers questions about life, the universe and everything. Any kid can submit a question for Dr. Universe to answer and some of the things children come up with is more interesting than the answers.

Force Windows to Boot Into Safe Mode Without Using the F8 Key

Author: mety Labels::

Force Windows to Boot into Safe Mode

Open up the start menu search or run box, and type in msconfig and hit the enter key.

image

Select the Boot tab, and then check the box for "Safe boot" and make sure the radio button below is set to "Minimal".

image

Once you hit the OK button you'll be asked if you want to Restart now or wait until later. Either way, the next boot will take you into safe mode.

image

Once you restart, you'll realize that you are in Safe Mode because it not only places that text in the four corners of the screen, but it even opens up the safe mode page from the help file in Vista.

image

Now you can work on getting rid of that spyware…

Turn Safe Mode Back Off

Once you are done fixing whatever you were working on, you'll probably want to turn safe mode off and go back to normal mode. Just open up msconfig the same way as above, and then on the Boot tab you'll uncheck the "Safe boot" checkbox.

image

This method especially helps if you need to repeatedly boot into Safe mode.

Embed True Type Fonts in Word and PowerPoint 2007 Documents

Author: mety Labels::

If you are the creative type that likes to use custom fonts in your documents or PowerPoint presentations, here is a cool tip to ensure that the readers of your document see the document with the fonts intact, just the way you want it to.

In this example I will use Word, but you can follow the same steps for PowerPoint also.
First, click on the Microsoft Office Button in the upper left hand corner and choose "Word Options". Select the Save tab on the left.

Under the "Preserve fidelity when sharing this document" section, first choose your document.

Then check the box for "Embed fonts in the file", and "Embed only the characters used in the document". Now when you save that document, the fonts will be embedded for everyone to see.

Detect and Repair Applications In Microsoft Office 2007

Author: mety Labels::

Windows Office 2007 has a new feature (which replaces detect and repair) which allows you to diagnose and repair problems when they occur in your daily tasks.
The diagnostic utility will check the Windows system event log, hard drive, memory, application compatibility, updated service packs, and Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) if your hard drive supports it.
I know it sounds like a lot, but let me show you how easy this is to run.

Start \ Programs \ Microsoft Office \ Microsoft Office Tools \ Microsoft Office Diagnostics

The Microsoft Office Diagnostics splash screen will open. Click Continue.

Next you are presented with the Start Diagnostics Screen showing you what is going to be checked and the status of each diagnostic. When you are ready click Run Diagnostics.

While the Diagnostics run you will see the status bars as each tests completes. When it's complete hit Continue.

You will get a limited detail of what was fixed. In this example all 5 diagnostic tests ran and one problem was identified and fixed. If you ok with that just close out and you are done. If you want to get additional information click on "Detailed results".

When you look close at the detailed information in this example you can see there was a problem with the installation and this tool automatically fixed it.

Unfortunately for an administrator or power user this utility "as is" does not display specific results (you need to do more digging ). However when you are in a hurry and need your applications up and running to finish your work Microsoft Office Diagnostics works great!

Author: mety Labels::

Like everything in Excel, you can customize the way your worksheet looks by changing the color of the gridlines to something festive.

Click the Office Button and Choose Excel Options.

4

Choose Advanced in the Excel Options Menu.

5

Scroll down to Display options for this worksheet, check Show gridlines, and choose a new color. If you do not want gridlines at all just uncheck the Show gridlines box.

In this example I choose red. This tip comes in handy if your looking for a better way to emphasis the grid layout.

Add Emphasis to Paragraphs with Drop Caps in Word 2007

Author: mety Labels::

You can add emphasis to your Word 2007 documents by using Drop Caps… you know, those big letters at the beginning of a document or paragraph that make your document look really professional.
Click the beginning of the paragraph you want to emphasize. Then click the Insert tab on the Ribbon and choose Drop Cap. You can scroll to any of the three preset Drop Caps and the document will change with your choice. By default it will drop by three lines.

blg

However, us geeks are never satisfied with default settings. You will notice in the screen above there is a choice for Drop Cap Options. In the options screen you can change the font, the number of lines to drop, and position.

4

Here is the result after choosing the stylish Old English font. (You might want to change the regular font to match)

5

This is a nice tip for adding 37 pieces of flair to your TPS reports, although using Drop Caps for every paragraph is probably overkill. Used sparingly however, I think it's a nice creative touch!

Create an Out Of Office AutoReply in Outlook

Author: mety Labels::

When you know you are going to be out of the office for a few days, you can set up the Out of Office Assistant to reply automatically, letting people know that you are enjoying your vacation while they are stuck at work. You can also add rules to forward messages based on different criteria.
remmember You need an Exchange server to get the Out-of-office assistant

Open Outlook and Click on Tools \ Out of Office Assistant.

Next check I am currently Out of the Office and compose a message for the sender. You can include as little or as much information in this box. In this example I wrote a fairly generic reply message.

After filling this out you can just click OK or you can continue to add specific rules to the message. To do this click on the Add Rule button.

If you want the rule to only apply to a small set of contacts, you can add contacts or a contact list by clicking on the From button and selecting them there. If you want the rule to apply to any incoming email, then select a combination of both "Sent directly to me" and "Copied (Cc) to me".

You can choose different actions to take for this rule. For instance if the message is coming from your boss you might want to have the message forwarded to another account, such as your mobile. Or you might want to have it reply with a different template. In this example I just chose to have them sent to my Inbox folder.

When you are done click on OK. You can then add another rule if you want to, just remember that the first matching rule in the list will be executed, but the rest of the matching rules will be executed if you don't check the "Do not process subsequent rules" option. (Notice the options to move the rules up and down in the last screen)
When you've completed everything you will be back to the Out of Office Assistant window. Once you have verified everything click OK.

Now every time you get an email from a specified address the user will automatically get your Auto Reply. This is very useful in the office and in business environments. It allows your customers and co-workers know you are not available and who to contact if they need further assistance.

Copy a Group of Cells in Excel 2007 to the Clipboard as an Image

Author: mety Labels::

If you want to share a small part of your Excel worksheet but don't want to send an Excel file, you can copy part of the worksheet to the clipboard as a picture instead, which can be pasted into any application that supports images, such as your favorite image editor.
The command in Excel 2007 to do this is oddly located on the Paste menu in the Ribbon. From the Home tab, click on the drop-down menu under the Paste button, and select As Picture \ Copy as Picture.

4

Now you will get a dialog asking you how you want to copy the picture. If you want to paste the picture into any application, you'll need to select "As shown on screen", and then "Bitmap".

image

Now your cell data should be on the clipboard, ready to paste into any application that allows you to paste in a bitmap. Here's an example of a bitmap I pasted into the editor I use for writing articles here:

How To Import a CSV File Containing a Column With a Leading 0 Into Excel

Author: mety Labels::

Microsoft Excel will automatically convert data columns into the format that it thinks is best when opening comma-separated data files. For those of us that don't want our data changed, we can change that behavior.
You have a CSV file probably exported from other application or given to you by other people. You would like to open it up in Excel since you know it very well. The CSV file will look like this (if you open the file in notepad.exe):
The file contains columns: ProductModelID, Name, SpecialID, and ModifiedDate. The column SpeicalID containing data with leading 0 and it is specialized code so you would like to keep the leading 0s in Excel. Since it is a CSV file it is, by default, shown in your Windows Explorer as an Excel file:
So you double-click the file and open the file in Excel as such:
You can see that by default, Excel stripped out the leading 0s in column 3 "SpecialID". You brought up Excel application and tried to use File/Open to open the file manually and that doesn't work either. How can I fix this?
The trick is to rename the file with .TXT extension then bring the file into Excel. SO first bring up "My Computer" and navigate the folder to where the file resides.
Now, if you don't see the file extension .CSV (Windows has this option disabled by default) then follow this step to enable the file extension – Select the menu "Tools"/"Folder Options" then select the "View" tab, uncheck the item "Hide extensions for known file types" as the picture below:
Then you should see the file extension as such:
Right click the file and select rename to rename the file to become "ProductInfo.txt"
Notice the icon changes to regular text file icon as well. No open up Excel and use "File"/"Open" command to bring the file into Excel. When you do this, a dialog will pop up like:
Make sure the "Delimited" radio button is selected and click on "Next" button to continue. On the next screen, check the box "Comma" and uncheck all other selections.
Click on "Next" to advance to the next screen. In this screen, you need to click on the "SpecialID" column and select the "Text" radiobutton from the "Column data format" section.
Click on "Finish" then you are done.
You can see now the column "SpecialID" has been brought in as a Text column and all leading 0 are preserved.
This method can be applied to any special circumstance for bringing in a CSV file into Excel including other delimited files. With the ability of specifying the data type for each column during the data importing process you are in much better control on your final result.
